Happy Hour Sound Bytes 2018-2019

Welcome to the 2018/19 Series! Once again we are offering five entertaining concerts designed to stimulate your appetite for music as well as relax you for the weekend. As with every year, artists from the Kingston area and guests from farther away share their musical talent and passion in five concerts encompassing: piano, jazz, string and wind music.

From October to May, you can experience the joy of live performance of various genres – for the same incredible price as last year! $50.00 for all 5 concerts

October 12, 2018Real Jazz Standards! A concert of ‘off Broadway’ jazz standards featuring tunes by Dave Brubeck, Clifford Brown, Benny Golson and others played by Chris Alfano (clarinet), Paul Morrison (piano), Paul Clifford (bass), Richard Bannard (drums).

November 16, 2018Gems of the Romantic Repertoire – Revel in the music of Brahms and Saint-Saëns. Chris Alfano and Michel Szczesniak perform the Brahms Sonata Number 2 in Eb for clarinet and piano and Katie Legere and Michel Szczesniak perform the Saint-Saëns Sonata for bassoon and piano.

Back by popular demand we again break for winter so that those of you who escape the cold can still enjoy our series in the spring!

March 15, 2019Salute to the Big Bands – Welcome Taylor Donaldson, trombone (from Montreal) to the series with his ever popular octet playing all your favorite tunes from the Big Band Era in fresh exciting arrangements by Taylor, that we are sure you’ll enjoy.

April 12, 2019 – Singing Strings – Welcome back Gisele Dalbec-Szczesniak and friends playing classical, folk and popular selections for string trio.

May 17, 2019From Old Classics to New Age  Katie and Chris are joined by Bill Egnatoff and Michel Szczesniak, for a concert of music for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, bassoon and piano. Enjoy charming selections including Charles Koechlin’s Epitaph for Jean Harlow, for alto sax, flute and piano, and Alex Shapiro’s Evensong Suite for flute, clarinet, bassoon and piano

November 10, 201720th Century guitar – Classic pieces from the new golden age of guitar  Jeff Hanlon – Classical Guitar

As a soloist and chamber musician, Jeff Hanlon has performed at venues and festivals across Canada and the United States, including the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Yale University’s New Music New Haven series and the Faculty Artist Series of Queen’s University. He has recorded for PBS radio and for CBC Radio 2, and has given workshops and masterclasses for guitarists at York University, the Canadian Guitar Festival and the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals (FCMF).

April 27, 2018 – Georgette Fry & friends

1994 Juno nominee and veteran of the Canadian music scene, blues and jazz artist, Georgette Fry, has dedicated many hours of her 35-year career towards raising funds for and awareness of the needs of women and children in crisis. In 2017 she was awarded a meritorious Service medal by Canada’s Governor General for her work with her non-reading, non-auditioning “pop” choir (Shout Sister!), specifically aimed at women whose so-called musical limitations may have robbed them of prior opportunities to sing in a group setting.

Join us in welcoming her to the series in a concert that will give you anything but the blues!

May 18, 2018Appealing to our ‘Bass’ Chris and Katie are joined by our favourite pianist, Michel to play music for clarinet (maybe some bass clarinet too), piano, bassoon  and even some contrabassoon!
